Snow at Benten Shrine, Inokashira by Hasui Kawase

Falling snow surrounds a vivid red shrine beside dark blue-green water in Snow at Benten Shrine, Inokashira, one of Hasui Kawase's beautifully atmospheric winter landscapes. Designed in 1929, the composition captures the Benten shrine at Inokashira beneath a heavy covering of fresh snow, its warm architecture reflected in the cold water below.

The contrast is immediately compelling. Brilliant white snow covers trees, roof and shoreline, while the red shrine provides a concentrated area of warmth at the centre of the composition. In the foreground, dark water and reeds create depth and reflect fragments of the snowy landscape.

A Masterpiece of Japanese Snow Landscape

Hasui was particularly celebrated for his snow scenes, and this design demonstrates why. Snow does more than identify the season: it simplifies the landscape, softens the trees and architecture, and creates a quiet atmosphere in which individual colours become especially powerful.

The shrine's red timber stands out against white snow and pale grey-blue sky. Large snow-covered trees gather around the building, while smaller bare branches rise on the opposite side. Individual snowflakes continue to fall across the scene, creating the impression that the landscape is being transformed before the viewer.

Water, Reflection and the Benten Shrine

The pond occupies a substantial part of the foreground. Its deep turquoise and blue tones contrast with the snow-covered bank and introduce a strong horizontal division across the composition.

Reflections of the shrine and surrounding vegetation are broken by the dark water, while dry reeds interrupt the smooth surface. These details prevent the winter scene from becoming static and reinforce Hasui's fascination with the interaction of water, weather and light.

About Hasui Kawase

Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) was one of the most important artists of the twentieth-century shin-hanga movement. He travelled widely throughout Japan and became renowned for landscapes in which rain, snow, twilight, moonlight and mist establish a powerful emotional atmosphere.

His winter scenes are among his most recognisable works. Rather than relying on extensive detail, Hasui often used snow to reduce architecture and nature to carefully balanced masses of white, dark blue, grey and a few concentrated areas of colour.

Japanese Winter Wall Art for Calm Interiors

The red, white and blue palette of this Hasui Kawase print creates a striking focal point while retaining an overall sense of tranquillity. It works particularly well in Japanese-inspired, Japandi, Scandinavian and minimalist interiors, especially alongside pale woods, neutral walls and blue-grey furnishings.
