Ohara Koson Chicks and Worm Print

Chicks and Worm is one of Ohara Koson's most charming and animated studies of animal behaviour. Five young chicks gather among grass, with two competing energetically for a worm while the other three watch the struggle unfold.

The subject is playful, but Koson's observation is precise. Each chick has a slightly different posture and reaction, turning a small episode from everyday nature into a lively Japanese woodblock composition.

Five Chicks and One Worm

The narrative can be understood immediately.

Two chicks occupy the centre of the action, pulling at opposite ends of the worm. Their bodies lean into the contest, creating tension through a simple horizontal line.

Three other chicks remain nearby. Rather than repeating the same pose, Koson varies their positions so that they appear to watch, approach or react to the competition.

This individualisation gives the print a degree of personality uncommon in more formal bird-and-flower imagery.

Movement and Natural Behaviour

Koson's reputation rests partly on his ability to observe how birds actually behave.

In Chicks and Worm, movement is conveyed through tiny details: angled heads, extended necks, planted feet and the opposing pull of the two central chicks.

The action remains easy to read because the artist avoids a complicated background. Grass establishes the natural setting while leaving sufficient open space around the figures.

Soft Colour and Fine Detail

The chicks are rendered in delicate cream, yellow and light brown tones that contrast gently with the muted grasses.

Fine marks describe downy feathers without making the birds appear heavy. Their small beaks and feet provide sharper accents, while the worm forms the visual link between the two principal figures.

The restrained colouring keeps attention on behaviour rather than decoration.

A Different Side of Koson's Kachō-ga

Many Koson prints create atmosphere through solitary birds, moonlight, snow or blossom.

This work is different. It is social, humorous and almost narrative.

Yet the principles remain recognisably Koson's: careful observation, economical composition and the ability to give a few small natural forms enormous visual character.

About Ohara Koson

Ohara Koson (1877–1945) was one of the great Japanese artists specialising in bird, flower and animal imagery during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

His designs encompass everything from powerful eagles and watchful owls to fish, monkeys, flowers and domestic birds.

Koson worked with several important woodblock publishers. The original Chicks and Worm design is associated with publisher Matsuki Heikichi and is dated by the Rijksmuseum to 1900–1930.

Chicks and Worm as Wall Art

The gentle palette and playful subject make this print particularly suitable for kitchens, family rooms, bedrooms and informal gallery walls.

It can also work beautifully in a nursery or child's room without appearing overtly juvenile, because the design retains the elegance of traditional Japanese printmaking.

Neutral walls, pale timber and Scandinavian or Japandi furniture complement its understated natural colours.
