Schrei am Meer (1919) by Hermann Max Pechstein
Schrei am Meer (1919), meaning Cry by the Sea, is one of Pechstein's most dramatic coastal figure compositions. A nude woman raises her arms against a turbulent sea and sky while another figure enters at the edge, turning the scene into an image of raw gesture and emotional release.
The original is oil on canvas measuring approximately 121.3 × 91.6 cm. Its combination of monumental scale, exposed figure and forceful sea imagery gives the work exceptional intensity.
Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this vertical composition makes a powerful statement in living rooms, bedrooms, stairways and larger feature walls.
Gesture against sea and sky
The raised arms create the dominant vertical movement, while diagonal bands of orange, blue and white suggest shifting shoreline, wind and surf. The human gesture and coastal environment seem to share the same emotional energy.
About Hermann Max Pechstein
Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.
Style and technique
Broad oil brushwork and saturated colour replace detailed modelling. Pechstein uses orange, blue, red and black as expressive forces, allowing figure and landscape to merge into a single heightened surface.
