Portrait of Charlotte Cuhrt (1910) by Hermann Max Pechstein
Portrait of Charlotte Cuhrt (1910) is one of Pechstein’s most striking full-length portraits. Fifteen-year-old Charlotte Cuhrt sits confidently in a brilliant red dress and dark hat, looking directly towards the viewer against an emphatic yellow-and-green interior.
The original is oil on canvas and measures approximately 175.8 × 85.4 cm. It was commissioned by Charlotte’s father, Berlin solicitor and avant-garde patron Max Cuhrt, as part of the decorative scheme for the family’s Kurfürstendamm apartment.
Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, the exceptionally tall composition is ideal for narrow feature walls, stairways, hallways and spaces where a dramatic vertical artwork is required.
A landmark full-length portrait
The unusual height of the canvas gives Charlotte an imposing presence. Her red dress, direct gaze and controlled seated pose contrast sharply with the yellow and green background, making the portrait both decorative and psychologically immediate.
About Hermann Max Pechstein
Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.
Style and technique
Pechstein uses bold, open oil brushwork and saturated Fauvist colour rather than conventional tonal modelling. Red, yellow and green are allowed to remain intense and largely unmixed, giving the painting its modern, declarative character.
