Portrait of a Woman (Damenbildnis) (1913/14) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Damenbildnis (1913/14) is a richly coloured portrait of Luise Mendelsohn, wife of architect Erich Mendelsohn. She sits against a deep green setting, her pale face, red-brown hair and green clothing framed by yellow and red accents that give the painting exceptional colour intensity.

The original is oil on canvas and is painted on both sides; the reverse carries a reclining nude. The canvas measures approximately 81.3 × 71.2 cm. Pechstein’s portrait belongs to a period in which he was developing increasingly concentrated colour fields and stronger formal simplification.

This Hermann Max Pechstein print reproduces the portrait side and is available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel. Its vertical proportions suit bedrooms, studies, hallways and gallery walls.

Luise Mendelsohn as Pechstein’s sitter

The portrait focuses less on elaborate setting than on the sitter’s presence and the colour relationships around her. Dark green and blue surround the pale face, while small red and yellow accents guide the eye through the composition.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Broad oil handling and dark contour lines separate the principal colour fields. Pechstein’s simplified modelling allows complementary colour contrasts to create much of the image’s depth and emotional intensity.
