Musikal-Clown Grock (1928) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Musikal-Clown Grock (1928) depicts the celebrated musical clown Grock in performance, seated with an instrument in a compact theatrical pose. Pechstein reduces the scene to broad washes, dark contour and a handful of descriptive details, preserving the energy of live performance.

The original is a watercolour on fine brownish wove paper measuring approximately 53.3 × 39.5 cm. It is monogrammed and dated 1928.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this playful Pechstein subject brings character to studies, music rooms, hallways and eclectic interiors.

Performance captured with economy

The figure is immediately recognisable as a stage performer, yet Pechstein avoids elaborate theatrical detail. The instrument, costume and seated posture are enough to establish the scene, while the loose surrounding washes keep attention on Grock himself.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Watercolour allows Pechstein to shift between transparent washes and darker, more concentrated marks. The result combines speed and clarity, giving the performer a lively presence without overworking the image.
