Murmel spielende Knaben (c. 1910) by Hermann Max Pechstein
Murmel spielende Knaben (c. 1910) captures two boys absorbed in play, one standing while the other crouches close to the ground. Pechstein gives the scene an immediate, spontaneous character through quick drawing, open areas of paper and concentrated passages of blue, yellow and green.
The original combines gouache, watercolour and ink over pencil on light paper and measures approximately 28.2 × 22.2 cm. It belongs to the period of Pechstein's close involvement with Die Brücke, when direct observation and vivid primary colour were central to his work.
This Hermann Max Pechstein print is available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel. Its light ground and strong blue accents make it an easy fit for modern, Scandinavian and eclectic interiors.
An everyday moment transformed by expressive drawing
Rather than filling the entire sheet, Pechstein lets much of the paper remain visible. The boys are defined by a few decisive outlines and blocks of colour, giving the small scene clarity, humour and a sense of passing movement.
About Hermann Max Pechstein
Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.
Style and technique
Gouache and watercolour supply bright, opaque and transparent colour while ink and pencil provide the underlying structure. The contrast between the open paper and concentrated blue forms gives the image much of its visual energy.
