Lotte with Headscarf (1919) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Lotte with Headscarf is a striking portrait of Charlotte “Lotte” Pechstein, the artist’s first wife and one of his most important models. Her dark patterned headscarf, strong features and white clothing are set against a luminous field of yellow and blue, giving the portrait an immediate emotional intensity.

The original German title is Lotte mit Kopftuch. The painting dates from around 1919 and was executed in oil on canvas, measuring approximately 88 × 62.5 cm. Pechstein used portraiture to combine recognisable likeness with the heightened colour and simplified forms central to Expressionism.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this vertical Pechstein portrait brings bold colour to bedrooms, studies, hallways and contemporary gallery walls.

Portraiture shaped by colour

The composition is built around the contrast between Lotte’s dark headscarf, pale clothing and the intense surrounding colour. Pechstein avoids polished naturalism, allowing broad brushwork and saturated colour to carry much of the portrait’s psychological force.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Broad oil brushwork, simplified contours and strongly separated colour areas give the portrait its characteristic Expressionist directness. Blue, yellow, red and green work as structural elements rather than merely descriptive colour.
