Details

Inder und Frauenakt (1910) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Inder und Frauenakt (1910) is an intensely coloured early Expressionist composition pairing a seated figure with a reclining female nude. Saturated orange, yellow, red and green sweep across the canvas, while the steep viewpoint and compressed space give the scene a deliberately unstable energy.

The original oil painting is on canvas, painted on both sides, and measures approximately 71.5 × 82.5 cm. The reclining nude was modelled by Charlotte “Lotte” Kaprolat, who later became Pechstein's wife. The work dates from a particularly important phase of his involvement with Die Brücke.

This Hermann Max Pechstein print is available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel. Its extraordinary colour makes it especially effective as a focal point in modern, eclectic and maximalist interiors.

Radical colour and compressed perspective

The reclining body, seated figure and surrounding textiles are pushed towards the picture plane. Pechstein uses colour structurally: orange, yellow and green define bodies and surfaces while the turquoise central passage creates a striking diagonal through the composition.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the major figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and developed a highly recognisable visual language built around simplified forms, emphatic contours and heightened colour. Figures, coastal life, landscapes and portraits remained central themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Painted in oil on canvas, Inder und Frauenakt combines strong contour with broad, intensely coloured brushwork. The simplified anatomy and unconventional spatial construction are characteristic of the radical visual experiments associated with early German Expressionism.
