Cows (1910) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Cows (1910) shows a small herd grazing beside intensely coloured water and fields. Pechstein uses deep blues, acidic greens and warm red-browns to turn a rural animal subject into a strongly decorative Expressionist landscape.

The original is one side of a rare double-sided oil painting on canvas measuring approximately 82 × 71 cm. The other side carries Boats at Dangaster Priel, also dated 1910.

This Hermann Max Pechstein print is available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel. Its bold rural palette works well in living rooms, dining rooms and eclectic gallery walls.

Animals within a colour-driven landscape

The cows are distributed across the foreground and middle distance, creating repeated horizontal movement against the blue water and green fields. They remain recognisable while being simplified into strong colour shapes.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, working life, coastal subjects, boats and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Pechstein's oil handling is direct and emphatic, with dark contour separating blocks of blue, green, red and brown. The treatment reflects the compressed, heightened colour of his Brücke-period painting.
