Boats on the Baltic Sea (1922) by Hermann Max Pechstein
Boats on the Baltic Sea (1922) presents dark red-brown sailing boats pushing through heavy green-blue Baltic waves under a deep night-like sky. The scene is immediately recognisable, yet Pechstein reshapes it through emphatic contour, simplified forms and a deliberately concentrated palette.
Boats on the Baltic Sea is the reverse of a double-sided oil painting recorded as In der Hängematte / Boote auf der Ostsee, with the two sides dated 1910 and 1922; the canvas measures approximately 74 × 80 cm.
This Hermann Max Pechstein print is available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel. Its dramatic maritime colour makes a strong statement in living rooms, studies and coastal interiors.
Water, shoreline and movement
The boats lean into the water at opposing angles while thick pale-green wave crests surge across the foreground. The compressed square composition makes sea and vessels feel powerfully close.
About Hermann Max Pechstein
Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and a major figure in German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and developed a recognisable language of forceful contour, simplified form and heightened colour. Landscapes, fishing communities, portraits, nudes and still lifes remained recurring subjects throughout his career.
Style and technique
Sweeping contours and layered bands of colour give the water and shoreline a strong directional rhythm. Pechstein simplifies boats, waves and landforms into clear shapes so that movement and colour carry the scene.
