Bewegungsstudie 15 (1918) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Bewegungsstudie 15 (1918) is a vigorous study of a reclining female nude in an unusually compressed pose. The body twists across the sheet in a continuous sequence of curves, while touches of red, ochre and blue give the drawing warmth and spatial definition.

The original is a watercoloured pen-and-ink drawing on brownish paper, approximately 43.4 × 34 cm. Pechstein uses anatomy not as an academic exercise but as a source of rhythm, tension and expressive movement.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this vertical Pechstein nude works especially well in bedrooms, dressing spaces, studies and narrow feature walls.

A nude study built around movement

The pose is deliberately complex: bent legs, raised arms and the turned head create a tightly interlocked silhouette. Pechstein's line remains economical and confident, giving the figure both weight and a surprising sense of fluidity.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Ink establishes the principal contour while watercolour adds selective warmth rather than fully modelling the body. Blue-grey accents around the figure help separate it from the paper and reinforce the energetic sweep of the pose.

Why choose this Hermann Max Pechstein print?

  • A dynamic 1918 female nude study.
  • Strong vertical proportions suited to narrower wall spaces.
  • Available as fine art prints, framed prints and canvas panels.
  • Warm ochre and restrained blue accents suit neutral contemporary interiors.
