August Macke Print, Lady in The Green Jacket (1913)

The Lady in Green Jacket is an oil-on-canvas painting by August Macke, a German artist. The work was created in 1913 and is now housed at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.

History and Description

This was one of Macke’s earliest paintings after he moved to Hilterfingen, Switzerland. Many of his later works, including this one, were influenced by Robert Delaunay without abandoning figuration.

The theme of the painting is a walk in the park – a favorite motif that Macke had been developing since the beginning of his career. Around the figures, the artist creates a world where people seem to fit into their stylized environment: ladies wear slim dresses with fashionable hats while men put on dark suits matched with bowler hats. Describing the characters of his paintings, Macke said: “The generally recognized attribute for men is bowler hats and I give them bowlers; women hold umbrellas in their hands against light because they have slender necks and hips.” There is no place for individuality — faces are schematically shown and clothes have uniform cut which makes personages even more faceless.

At the center of composition stands half-turned woman in green jacket whose figure divides canvas into two vertical parts. Two couples are walking under tree crowns in middle ground: leaning on parapet man and woman watch river flowing by; two other people are passing next to them — trees branches grow from each other almost at right angle; their drawing was taken by Macke from A Treatise on Painting compiled according theoretical writings Leonardo da Vinci (Macke studied these books during his Berlin stay 1907–1908 when he attended Lovis Corinth’s studio). Houses on both sides of river conceived simple forms mountains distance represented triangles This reducing usual objects to basic geometric shapes characteristic early Cubism including works Delaunay.

It seems as if artist stopped flow of time; “warm autumn colors” (Magdalena Moeller) give an impression peace this peace increases by even illumination with complementary color contrast. Figures illuminated uniformly from all sides merge with surrounding world.

August Robert Ludwig Macke (3 January 1887 – 26 September 1914) was a German Expressionist painter. He was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). He lived during a particularly innovative time for German art: he saw the development of the main German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the successive avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe. Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him.
