Sunshine in the Drawing Room III is one of those rare Hammershøi interiors where sunlight feels almost like a character. Bright rectangles fall across the room, sharpening the white lyre-back chairs and throwing deeper shadows around the black-upholstered sofa. A portrait above the sofa watches over the otherwise empty space.

Painted in 1903 in the drawing room at Strandgade 30, the work belongs to a series in which Hammershøi returned to the same furniture and architecture as the light changed. Here the sun briefly disrupts the room’s restraint. The chairs seem brighter, the floor warmer and the shadows more pronounced, yet the overall feeling remains composed. It is easy to imagine the light moving on a few minutes later and leaving the room transformed again.

The contrast between luminous whites, dark upholstery and soft neutral walls gives this print unusual depth while keeping the palette understated.
