Valencian Fishermen concentrates on figures and their catch, while Sewing the Sail transforms a practical task into a broad arrangement of white fabric, filtered sunlight and grouped workers. Sorolla and Impressionist Painting

Sorolla developed his own approach alongside the international spread of Impressionism. Like the French Impressionists, he frequently worked outdoors and used visible brushwork to record changing light. His paintings nevertheless remain closely connected with Spanish places, working life and the intense sunlight of the Mediterranean.

The large scale and physical movement of many Sorolla compositions distinguish them from smaller studies of fleeting atmosphere. Figures, animals, boats and sails often occupy substantial canvases while still appearing immersed in changing natural light.

Vision of Spain

Sorolla’s monumental Vision of Spain series consists of fourteen large panels commissioned for the Hispanic Society of America. Created between 1912 and 1919, the paintings represent the landscapes, clothing, customs and working life of different Spanish regions.

The project extended Sorolla’s interest beyond the Mediterranean coast and demonstrates the scale of his ambition. Rather than presenting Spain through a single historical narrative, the series brings together regional settings, contemporary people and distinctive forms of local life.
