Ohara Koson Long-eared Owl on Bare Tree Branch Print
Long-eared Owl on Bare Tree Branch is one of Ohara Koson's most arresting night-time bird designs.
A broad-bodied owl faces directly towards the viewer from a dark twisting branch. Its brilliant orange eyes provide the strongest colour in an otherwise subdued grey composition, while a pale crescent moon hangs low in the open space beneath the bird.
The Owl and Crescent Moon
Koson builds the composition from remarkably few elements.
The owl occupies the upper part of the sheet, the branch curves beneath its feet and the crescent moon sits far below.
The large interval between bird and moon is crucial. Instead of filling the night sky with scenery, Koson allows the open grey background to create silence and distance.
A Powerful Direct Gaze
Many of Koson's birds are shown in profile or engaged in natural activity. This owl is different.
It looks directly outward.
The frontal head, raised ear tufts and intense orange eyes create an unusually strong connection with the viewer. Subtle feather markings provide texture across the body without weakening the bold silhouette.
Japanese Night-Time Atmosphere
The print relies on tonal restraint rather than dramatic colour.
Grey, charcoal, black and off-white dominate, with the eyes supplying a small but highly effective warm accent.
The crescent moon and nearly bare branches suggest a quiet night landscape without requiring a detailed setting.
About Ohara Koson
Ohara Koson (1877–1945) was one of the great modern Japanese artists of kachō-ga, the tradition of bird-and-flower imagery.
He produced numerous owl designs during his career, exploring different species, seasons and settings. This early twentieth-century work was published by Matsuki Heikichi in Tokyo.
Koson's prints are admired for their ability to convey an animal's distinctive behaviour and character through economical composition and subtle colour.
Displaying the Long-eared Owl
The monochromatic palette makes this one of the easiest Koson prints to integrate into a modern interior.
It works especially well against putty, grey, cream, charcoal and muted green walls and is particularly suited to bedrooms, studies, hallways and reading areas.
The vertical format also makes it effective above narrow furniture or as part of a Japanese wildlife gallery wall.
