Vine and Leaf Textile Pattern from Bijutsu Sekai, Watanabe Shōtei Print

Vine and Leaf Textile Pattern by Watanabe Shōtei

This elegant Japanese pattern arranges curling vines, stylised leaves and delicate flower-like forms across alternating bands of cream and warm brown. The foliage passes freely between the horizontal sections, connecting the design and softening its underlying geometric structure.

Subtle variations in line and colour give the print the character of a hand-produced design. Cream, tan and deep brown create a restrained natural palette, while the sweeping stems introduce movement across the otherwise ordered bands.

From Bijutsu Sekai

The image is associated with Bijutsu Sekai, an important Meiji-period publication devoted to Japanese art and design. Watanabe Shōtei, also known as Watanabe Seitei, brought an especially refined understanding of plants, birds and decorative composition to his work.
