Pontormo Prints – Encounters, Portraits & Sacred Scenes
Pontormo prints connect closely gathered figures through colour and small gestures. A meeting in the street and a shared meal use different arrangements around the face and hands, while a dark portrait isolates one sitter. Browse these works alongside Old Master prints, religious art and portrait painting.
Four figures within a narrow street space
Visitation of Carmignano gathers the women in blue, green, pink and orange drapery, with the central pair reaching towards one another. Two faces look out from behind them. The large fabric shapes interlock across the foreground, leaving only a small amount of the surrounding architecture visible.
Hands and faces around a small table
Supper at Emmaus sets the central figure beyond the meal, with seated companions and standing observers enclosing the group. Bright clothing separates the bodies from the darker room. Bread, vessels and the pale tabletop hold the lower centre beneath the different directions of gesture and gaze.
Dark clothing around a direct gaze
Portrait of Cosimo de’ Medici places the young sitter before restrained architectural details, with one hand at the waist and the other lowered nearby. The dark garment forms a broad, compact silhouette. Small highlights across the face and hands distinguish the body without filling the surrounding space with decoration.
