Portrait of Maude Abrantes is an early Paris portrait in which the sitter’s long neck and almond-shaped eyes already anticipate Modigliani’s later figure style. The face and upper body are modelled more fully than in his mature portraits, yet the outlines are already simplified and the neck deliberately extended.

Earthy, muted colours and low-key contrasts give the painting a subdued, introspective tone. Rather than describe a detailed environment, the painting concentrates on the sitter’s posture, facial structure and relationship to the surrounding colour.

Painted around 1907–08, this is one of the earliest works in the present GalleryThane Modigliani group. Its interest lies partly in that transitional character: recognisable traces of conventional modelling coexist with the elongation and formal simplification that would become central to his art.
