Alfred Thompson Bricher’s Coastal Paintings
Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837–1908) painted the American landscape from mountain valleys and autumn woodland to the beaches and rocky headlands of the Atlantic coast. His seascapes became a particular focus, capturing the changing appearance of surf, wet sand, tidal pools and distant sails.
This collection includes views of the Maine coast, New England shores, Grand Manan and other coastal settings. In paintings such as A Quiet Day near Manchester and Along the Maine Coast, the shoreline provides a setting for studies of open sky, water and rock. Other works concentrate on breaking waves or the silhouettes of boats against evening light.
The Hudson River School and White Mountain Art
Bricher’s landscapes belong to the wider tradition of nineteenth-century American painting associated with the Hudson River School. His White Mountain subjects explore New Hampshire’s scenery, while river and meadow paintings extend his interest in reflection, seasonal colour and distant views.
Works such as Late Autumn in the White Mountains, Along the Hudson River and On the Meadows of Old Newburyport show the range of his subjects beyond the sea. Explore our Hudson River School prints for more American landscapes from this period.
Choosing an Alfred Thompson Bricher Print
For an open coastal view, look for Bricher’s broad horizons, pale skies and stretches of beach. His wave paintings bring more movement, with white surf breaking around dark rocks, while autumn landscapes offer warmer colours and wooded scenery.
