Alexander Kanoldt and New Objectivity
Alexander Kanoldt (1881–1939) was a German painter associated with New Objectivity, or Neue Sachlichkeit. His work developed from the experimental painting of the early twentieth century towards a more measured treatment of objects, buildings and figures. Firm outlines, carefully balanced shapes and a restrained atmosphere became defining features of his mature paintings.
Kanoldt’s subjects often appear ordinary at first: a plant on a table, a group of vessels or houses rising above a hillside. Their distinctive character comes from the way he organises space, giving familiar things an unusually deliberate presence.
Still Lifes: Plants, Vessels and Tabletop Arrangements
Still Life with Rubber Tree and Grosses Stilleben mit Krügen und roter Teedose, or Large Still Life with Jugs and a Red Tea Tin, introduce an important strand of Kanoldt’s painting. Leaves, containers and domestic objects become a means of exploring volume, proportion and the spaces between forms.
The collection also includes Still Life with Coffee Tableware and Apples, offering another approach to the tabletop subject. Browse our wider still life prints collection to compare Kanoldt’s arrangements with works by artists from other periods and movements.
Italian Towns and Mountain Landscapes
Views of Olevano and San Gimignano reflect Kanoldt’s interest in Italian architecture and landscape. Buildings provide interlocking blocks and repeated edges, while hills and distant terrain extend his study of structure beyond the tabletop.
Mountain subjects such as Gebirgsansicht, or Mountain View, and Blick auf die Alpspitze, or View of the Alpspitze, broaden the collection’s geographical range. Explore more rural scenery, towns and mountain subjects in our landscape and scenery prints.
Portraits and Early Modern Painting
Kanoldt’s self-portraits and Portrait of a Girl bring the human figure into this selection. Alongside the landscapes and still lifes, they show the range of subjects through which he explored the relationship between observation and pictorial construction.

For a different strand of German modernism, our Expressionist art prints offer a comparison with the more emotionally charged use of colour and form found among Kanoldt’s contemporaries.
