About Vilhelm Hammershøi

Vilhelm Hammershøi was born in Copenhagen in 1864 and trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts before studying with Peder Severin Krøyer.

He painted portraits, landscapes and architecture, but became most closely associated with the sparse interiors of his Copenhagen homes. His wife Ida appeared repeatedly in these works, often shown from behind and absorbed into the stillness of the surrounding room.

Hammershøi's distinctive combination of muted colour, architectural precision and psychological atmosphere has brought his work increasing international recognition. Paintings that once appeared unusually austere now seem strikingly modern in their simplicity.
