Bright blue undulating lines alternate with grey geometric bands in this lively Japanese decorative design by Watanabe Shōtei. Small red, purple and ochre motifs appear to drift across the surface, creating focal points within the repeated rhythm of waves and interlocking lattice forms.

The composition brings together natural movement and structured ornament. Flowing blue stripes suggest water, while the angular grey bands recall woven or printed textile patterns. The small coloured forms add warmth and prevent the design from becoming strictly symmetrical.
