Utagawa Kunisada Prints – Shunga, Pattern & Japanese Figure Design
Utagawa Kunisada prints in this collection centre on historical shunga designs from The Erotic Road to the Capital. Adult intimate encounters appear within rooms, boats and travel settings, surrounded by patterned textiles and written panels. Explore the designs’ composition alongside Japanese figure prints, the wider Japanese collection and figurative art.
A design divided by a strong red panel
Meeting at the Temple places the principal figures against a large warm-coloured area, with a smaller outdoor view at one side. Textile patterns and the vertical inscription provide additional divisions. The arrangement contrasts broad flat colour with finer lines, giving the design several scales of detail without a single continuous perspective.
An intimate scene within a travelling setting
Ferry in the Yodo gathers figures, patterned clothing and the boat’s structure into the foreground, with a quieter view beyond. The written panel and contrasting fabric areas create clear boundaries within the close grouping. Compare the framed distant setting with the larger flat red area used in Meeting at the Temple.
The foreground encounter and the view beyond
Ōtsu places closely grouped figures before an open view of water, boats and a low shoreline. Dark patterned fabrics and pale areas separate the foreground forms. The distant setting provides a second scale of looking, balancing the compact interior arrangement with a much broader landscape.
