A child beside the basket

The Auld Creel places a young figure on the shore next to a large woven creel. The pale clothing and bright water soften the outline of the body, while the basket provides a darker, rounded form. The small objects and lowered head make the activity feel closely observed.

A figure within the shallow water

Day at the Beach shows a child holding a basket while looking down towards the sand and water. Warm brown reflections and pale clothing keep the colours close together. The wide, lightly marked surroundings leave the figure room within the beach rather than turning the scene into a formal portrait.

A small vessel near the feet

The Toy Boat sets a child bending towards a toy boat at the water’s edge. The upright figure, basket and low boat establish three different shapes within the pale setting. The activity directs attention downward, making a small patch of shallow water the centre of the scene.
