Upright figures within the dark expanse

Dante and Virgil in the Ninth Circle of Hell places two standing bodies above a low field of pale, closely gathered forms. Their coloured clothing remains distinct within the shadow. The surrounding space gives the encounter a much wider scale than the central group alone would suggest.

A narrative encounter within the interior

Don Quixote Illustration gathers figures in varied clothing beside furniture, hanging objects and a warm wall. Different gestures direct attention across the group. The smaller room gives the narrative a closer, more populated setting than the dark open space of the Dante subject.

A group framed by the doorway

Flower Sellers of London places an adult holding a child beside younger figures and baskets of flowers. Pale stone surrounds the darker clothing and warm blooms. Their different heights give the group a clear arrangement within the narrow upright format.
