A farewell at the stone doorway

God Speed places a richly dressed woman beside an armoured rider, with a dark arch behind them. Pale fabric and red cloth separate the two figures from the stone setting. Their joined action makes the small area between hands and upper bodies the focus of the composition.

A single figure absorbed in work

Stitching the Standard shows a woman holding a large yellow-and-dark textile on a pale stone terrace. Her lowered head and angled arms direct attention towards the fabric. The simple architectural surroundings leave the folds and contrasting colours to describe the main movement within the still pose.

Passengers gathered on the river

The Ferry groups figures within a small open boat, with the rower at one end and houses beyond the bank. Different hats and clothing separate the passengers without breaking the group apart. The horizontal river setting offers a less enclosed counterpart to the stone doorways and terraces.
