An animal within the winter distance

The Lone Wolf places a standing wolf on pale snow beneath a dark blue-green sky. Sparse stems and distant lights leave the surrounding ground largely open. The animal’s turned head provides a small directional accent within a scene defined by space, cold colour and the contrast between near and far.

A horse bringing the group forward

The Polish Wedding Ride sets a light-coloured horse and a small cart close to the viewer on a muddy track. The passengers gather beneath a pale sky, with open fields behind. Dark ruts and patches of ground give the foreground texture around the more compact mass of figures and harness.

Travel beneath the evening sky

A Horse-Drawn Sled in a Winter Landscape at Dusk places a dark horse and seated traveller on snowy ground with small dogs nearby. Warm light remains near the horizon, while the foreground is cooler and darker. Compare this low, still arrangement with the brighter forward movement of the wedding cart.
