The Deluge presents the Biblical flood as a disaster on a planetary scale. Water, rock and storm seem to rotate through the composition while scattered human figures struggle within a landscape that offers almost no stable ground. Light breaks through the darkness only in violent flashes, intensifying the sense that nature itself has become uncontrollable.

Painted in 1834 and now in the Yale Center for British Art, the work combines the story of Noah with Martin’s fascination with geology, astronomy and theories of ancient catastrophe. He imagined the flood not simply as heavy rain but as a collision of vast natural forces. When the painting was shown at the Paris Salon in 1835, it won a gold medal and confirmed Martin’s international reputation for apocalyptic spectacle.
