Berlin streets and café life

Lesser Ury (1861–1931) made modern city life a central subject of his art. Horse-drawn cabs, pedestrians and illuminated windows appear throughout his Berlin scenes, with rain and evening light changing the appearance of familiar streets. Views of Unter den Linden, the Brandenburg Gate and the Tiergarten sit alongside café interiors where individual figures occupy quieter spaces.

Ury worked in oils and pastels, using loose marks and shifts of colour to describe light and atmosphere. His paintings belong to the wider story of Impressionist art, with a particular interest in the streets and interiors of the growing European city.

Landscapes beyond the city

This collection also follows Ury beyond Berlin: to Dutch canals and villages, the shores of Lake Garda, wooded countryside and Waterloo Bridge in London. These subjects show the range of his attention to weather, water and changing daylight. Explore our landscape prints for more countryside and waterside scenes.
