Georges Braque painted La Mandore in 1909–10, during the early development of Analytical Cubism. The composition centres on a mandore, a small stringed instrument related to the lute, whose curved body and strings can still be traced within the surrounding network of angular planes.

Instead of showing the instrument from one fixed position, Braque presents several aspects of its structure at once. Curves, verticals and faceted shapes overlap, compressing the mandore and its surroundings into a shallow pictorial space. The object appears to emerge from and recede into the composition as the eye follows its fragmented outline.

The restrained range of brown, ochre, grey and muted green allows tonal variation and structure to take precedence over strong colour. Light and shadow are distributed across individual planes rather than used to describe a conventionally modelled object.

La Mandore demonstrates how Braque used the familiar shapes of musical instruments to examine perception, space and the construction of an image.
