Painted in the summer of 1917, Paysage aux baigneuses, Colombier combines two of the artist's most enduring subjects – the female figure and the sunlit landscape – within a large and expressive composition.

Available as fine art prints and canvas panels, this colourful work demonstrates how Manguin continued to develop the lessons of Fauvism long after the movement's earliest years. Figures, vegetation and landscape are united through simplified contours, visible brushwork and a palette shaped by his lifelong fascination with colour.

Bathers in the Landscape

The subject of bathers offered Manguin an ideal way to combine figure painting with his love of the natural world.

Rather than isolating the human body as a formal studio subject, he places his figures within the surrounding landscape. The bathers become part of the wider composition, sharing colours and rhythms with trees, vegetation and open ground.

This integration of figure and setting gives Landscape with Bathers, Colombier its relaxed atmosphere. The scene suggests leisure and outdoor life rather than formal posing.

Painting Style

A Mature Development of Fauvist Colour

By 1917, the brief historical moment of Fauvism had ended more than a decade earlier, but its central lessons remained deeply embedded in Manguin's painting.

Colour continues to operate independently from strict naturalism. Areas of landscape and figure are simplified and connected through expressive painted passages rather than meticulous academic modelling.

At the same time, the work demonstrates a mature sense of balance. Manguin no longer needed to rely on the most startling colour contrasts of the early Fauvist years. His palette could remain expressive while producing a calmer and more unified composition.

The Tradition of the Bather in Modern Art

The bather was one of the most important recurring themes in French modern painting.

Paul Cézanne repeatedly explored groups of bathers, using the human body as a structural element within the landscape. Renoir approached the subject through colour and sensuality, while Matisse transformed the figure through increasingly radical simplification.

Manguin developed his own interpretation. His bathers generally inhabit inviting, sunlit environments and are closely integrated with the surrounding vegetation.

In Paysage aux baigneuses, Colombier, the landscape is not merely a backdrop for the figures. Human bodies, trees and open space form a unified decorative and pictorial structure.

Colombier and Manguin's Landscape Painting

Manguin repeatedly sought environments where he could combine natural scenery with figures and strong light.

Colombier provided the setting for several works during this period, including studies and more fully developed compositions. The landscape allowed him to continue exploring the relationship between figures and nature while moving beyond the coastal imagery most closely associated with his Saint-Tropez paintings.

In this work, the location becomes less important as a precise topographical record than as a stage for colour, movement and the human figure.

Colour, Form and Visual Rhythm

The composition is organised through repeated curves and colour relationships.

The bodies of the bathers echo organic forms within the landscape, allowing the figures to feel naturally embedded within their surroundings. Areas of vegetation create larger masses that balance the smaller human forms.

Visible brushwork retains a sense of immediacy, while Manguin's simplified drawing prevents the painting from becoming overburdened with detail.

The result is a work that can be read both as a figurative scene and as a broader arrangement of colour and shape.

A Large and Important Manguin Composition

The original Paysage aux baigneuses, Colombier is substantially larger than many of Manguin's landscapes, measuring approximately 81.2 × 100.5 cm.

This scale allows the figures and surrounding landscape to interact across a broad pictorial field rather than functioning as a small landscape sketch.

The painting remained closely associated with the Manguin family after the artist's death, with provenance tracing it to Jeanne Manguin in Saint-Tropez. It is also recorded in the catalogue raisonné of Manguin's painted work.

These factors reinforce its significance within his mature figure-and-landscape compositions.

Landscape with Bathers Wall Art for Modern Interiors

A Henri Manguin Landscape with Bathers wall art print combines the visual appeal of landscape painting with the human presence of figurative art.

Its expressive colour makes it particularly suitable for contemporary, Scandinavian, Mediterranean, eclectic and mid-century modern interiors.

The horizontal composition works especially well above sofas, sideboards, beds and longer pieces of furniture, where its combination of landscape and figures can form a substantial focal point.

Neutral walls allow Manguin's colours to stand out, while natural wood and understated textiles complement the work's relaxed outdoor atmosphere.

A Paysage aux baigneuses, Colombier print also pairs effectively with works by Henri Matisse, André Derain and other French modern painters in a gallery wall focused on Fauvism and early twentieth-century colour.

About Henri Manguin

Henri Manguin (1874–1949) was a French painter whose brilliant colour and relaxed Mediterranean subjects made him one of the most distinctive artists associated with Fauvism.

Born in Paris, Manguin studied under Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts alongside Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet.

His early work absorbed lessons from Impressionism before moving towards the expressive colour associated with Fauvism. In 1905 Manguin exhibited at the Salon d'Automne alongside Matisse, André Derain and other artists whose paintings became known for their radical treatment of colour.

Throughout his career, Manguin remained particularly interested in landscapes, bathers and intimate portraits. His wife Jeanne was his most important recurring model, while southern France provided the light and landscape that shaped much of his mature work.

Even after the Fauvist movement itself had ended, Manguin retained its freedom of colour while developing a softer and more harmonious style.

Today, Henri Manguin prints are admired for their distinctive combination of colour, landscape, figurative art and an enduring atmosphere of warmth and
