Joshua stands on a rocky height with his arm raised while armies move through the valley below, monumental cities stretch across the mountains and storm, sunlight and lightning divide the sky.

Painted in 1816 and now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the picture was Martin’s breakthrough work. The subject comes from the Book of Joshua: during the battle for Gibeon, Joshua asks God to halt the sun so that the Israelites have enough daylight to defeat their enemies. Martin magnifies the episode through extreme scale, making the human action feel inseparable from the weather and landscape.

The wide composition rewards larger display sizes, particularly above sofas, sideboards and fireplaces where the architecture and battle can be read across the full image. Available as a fine art print, framed print or canvas panel, with free UK delivery.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1016/3209/products/JoshuaCommandingtheSuntoStandStill_10x8_wm4.jpg?v=1618402982
https://gallerythane.com/en-eu/products/john-martin-fine-art-print-joshua-commanding-the-sun-to-stand-still
