Rows of columns, terraces, statues and ceremonial spaces recede into the distance while the feast unfolds below. The supernatural writing on the wall breaks into this vast human display of wealth with a brilliant, terrifying light.

Martin first exhibited the composition in 1821 and later spread its fame through large mezzotint prints, including an 1826 version held by the National Gallery of Art. The subject comes from the Book of Daniel: King Belshazzar uses sacred vessels at his feast, only to receive the mysterious warning that his kingdom is about to fall. Martin makes the architecture itself part of that warning, creating a civilisation so enormous that its sudden fragility feels shocking.

With its deep perspective, glowing highlights and monumental scale, this print is especially effective above a sofa, sideboard or dining table. Available as a fine art print, framed print or canvas panel in multiple sizes, with free UK delivery.
