Painted in 1920, The Gulf of Saint-Tropez from Oustalet – Le Golfe de Saint-Tropez depuis l'Oustalet – presents a sweeping view across one of the stretches of coastline most closely associated with Manguin's art.

Available as fine art prints and canvas panels, this sun-filled landscape combines vivid blues, greens and warm Mediterranean tones with the expressive brushwork that developed from Manguin's involvement with Fauvism. A solitary sailboat in the distance adds a quiet focal point to a composition dominated by water, vegetation and the broad expanse of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.

A View Across the Gulf of Saint-Tropez

Saint-Tropez became one of the defining locations of Henri Manguin's career. The brilliant light, intensely coloured vegetation and changing blues of the Mediterranean provided subjects perfectly suited to his fascination with colour.

In The Gulf of Saint-Tropez from Oustalet, Manguin looks outward across the landscape rather than concentrating on the fashionable resort that Saint-Tropez would later become. The emphasis is on the relationship between land, sea and light.

The distant sailboat is deliberately small within the wider composition. Rather than becoming the principal subject, it emphasises the scale and tranquillity of the gulf, introducing a human presence without disturbing the painting's sense of openness.

Painting Style

Fauvist Colour After the Birth of Fauvism

Manguin had been one of the artists associated with the emergence of Fauvism at the beginning of the twentieth century. By 1920 the original Fauvist movement had long since dispersed, but the lessons Manguin learned during those revolutionary years remained central to his painting.

Colour does not merely describe the landscape. Blues, greens and warmer notes are strengthened and balanced for their visual effect, allowing the painting to communicate the warmth and clarity of Mediterranean light rather than reproducing every detail literally.

This gives The Gulf of Saint-Tropez a character that is recognisably rooted in Fauvism while also reflecting the more lyrical and harmonious direction Manguin developed during his mature career.

Manguin's Mediterranean Palette

Colour is the defining element of the painting. The blues of the gulf contrast with areas of green vegetation and warmer tones in the surrounding landscape, producing the sense of brilliant southern light for which Manguin became known.

Unlike some Fauvist painters, who frequently pushed colour towards deliberate confrontation, Manguin often sought harmony. His strongest colours work together rather than competing for attention, creating paintings that feel vivid without becoming harsh.

This quality makes a Henri Manguin Saint-Tropez print particularly appealing for interiors. The work provides substantial colour while retaining a calm and inviting atmosphere.

Saint-Tropez and Henri Manguin

Manguin first encountered Saint-Tropez during the crucial early Fauvist period. Southern France became an enduring source of inspiration, and he returned repeatedly to its coast, gardens, villas and surrounding countryside.

The area had also attracted fellow artists including Paul Signac and Henri Matisse. For Manguin, its combination of intense sunlight and Mediterranean colour offered an environment in which the principles of expressive colour could be explored naturally.

Over the following decades, Saint-Tropez became far more than a temporary painting destination. It remained closely connected with Manguin's life and art, and he continued painting the region throughout his career.

A Landscape of Light and Leisure

One of the most distinctive characteristics of Manguin's work is its atmosphere of pleasure and tranquillity. His paintings frequently depict gardens, coastal scenery, bathers and family life rather than scenes of urban tension or social drama.

The Gulf of Saint-Tropez from Oustalet exemplifies this quality. The broad view, distant sailing boat and saturated Mediterranean colour create an image associated with open air, warmth and quiet leisure.

The result is a landscape that feels both modern and timeless. Its simplified forms and expressive colour connect it with twentieth-century modernism, while its coastal subject remains immediately accessible.

The Gulf of Saint-Tropez Wall Art for Modern Interiors

A Henri Manguin The Gulf of Saint-Tropez wall art print is particularly well suited to rooms where colour and a sense of openness are desired. The Mediterranean blues and greens can bring freshness to a living room, bedroom, dining room, hallway or home office.

The painting works especially well with contemporary, Scandinavian, Mediterranean and mid-century modern interiors. Neutral walls in white, cream, putty, beige or warm grey allow Manguin's colour to become the focal point, while natural woods complement the landscape's organic character.

Displayed above a sofa, console table, sideboard or fireplace, a Manguin Saint-Tropez print can provide a substantial statement piece without overwhelming the surrounding décor. It can also be combined with works by Henri Matisse, André Derain or Albert Marquet to create a gallery wall centred on French modern art and Fauvism.

About Henri Manguin

Henri Manguin (1874–1949) was a French painter and one of the artists associated with the development of Fauvism. Born in Paris, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Gustave Moreau, where fellow students included Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet.

Manguin initially absorbed influences from Impressionism before developing the increasingly intense colour that brought him into the Fauvist circle. In 1905 he exhibited at the famous Salon d'Automne alongside Matisse, André Derain and other artists whose brilliant non-naturalistic colour led critic Louis Vauxcelles to describe them as les fauves – “the wild beasts”.

Although Manguin embraced the freedom of Fauvist colour, his paintings often possess a gentler and more lyrical character than those of some of his contemporaries. Mediterranean landscapes, gardens, bathers, still lifes and portraits of his wife Jeanne became recurring subjects.

Southern France was particularly important to his art. Saint-Tropez and the surrounding Côte d'Azur provided brilliant light, blue water and colourful vegetation that suited his palette perfectly.

Today, Henri Manguin prints are valued for their combination of Fauvist colour, Mediterranean atmosphere and an enduring sense of warmth and visual
