evening-of-ushibori-hasui-kawase-japanese-art-print
Twilight at Ushibori, Hasui Kawase, Japanese Art Print

Twilight at Ushibori by Hasui Kawase

Twilight at Ushibori is one of Hasui Kawase’s most serene waterside landscapes, created in 1930. A small sailing boat glides across almost perfectly still water beneath a fading evening sky, while a slender stand of trees rises from the distant bank. Reflections extend across the surface below, transforming an apparently simple riverside view into a sophisticated study of light, colour and tranquillity.

The composition is dominated by horizontal bands of water, riverbank and sky. Against this calm structure, the pale sail and tall dark trees provide the principal vertical accents. Hasui’s subtle gradations of blue, green and warm yellow-orange capture the brief interval between daylight and night with remarkable sensitivity.

A Sailing Boat at Dusk

The small boat sits slightly away from the centre of the composition, carrying a handful of figures beneath a single pale sail. Its reflection falls almost directly beneath it, emphasising the extraordinary stillness of the water.

Behind the boat, a low grassy bank stretches horizontally across the landscape. Tall trees rise in an irregular group towards the left, their dark silhouettes mirrored softly in the water below. The figures and boat remain small in relation to the landscape, allowing the expansive river and sky to dominate the mood.

Sunset Light over Ushibori

Colour is central to the effect of Twilight at Ushibori. Deep blue water becomes progressively lighter towards the horizon, while a narrow band of warm yellow and orange marks the last light of sunset beneath layers of blue-grey cloud.

The reflected sunset introduces a gentle glow across the water around the sailing boat. Rather than creating dramatic contrast, Hasui allows the colours to merge gradually, producing the subtle atmospheric transitions for which shin-hanga landscape prints are particularly admired.

Ushibori and Japan’s Waterside Landscape

Ushibori lies close to Lake Kasumigaura in Ibaraki Prefecture, an area historically associated with waterways and boat transport. Hasui repeatedly returned to waterside subjects because rivers, canals and lakes allowed him to explore reflections, weather and changing light.

In this composition there is almost no architectural detail. The landscape is reduced to the essential elements of water, vegetation, boat and sky, giving the image a timeless quality despite its depiction of a specific location.

About Hasui Kawase

Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) was one of the leading artists of the twentieth-century shin-hanga movement. His landscape designs frequently depict places at transitional moments — dawn, sunset, twilight, snowfall or rain — when natural light temporarily transforms familiar surroundings.

Twilight at Ushibori demonstrates his mastery of this approach particularly clearly. Nothing dramatic occurs within the scene, yet the precise balance of colour, reflection and open space creates an image with remarkable emotional presence.

Blue Japanese Wall Art for Peaceful Interiors

The deep blue, turquoise, green and warm sunset tones make this Hasui Kawase print particularly suited to bedrooms, living rooms and studies. Its horizontal format works beautifully above a sofa, sideboard or bed, while its calm palette complements Japandi, Scandinavian, minimalist and Japanese-inspired interiors.

Available as a fine art print and canvas panel, Twilight at Ushibori is an especially appealing choice for collectors of Japanese landscape prints, blue Japanese art and atmospheric shin-hanga.

OnTrendAndFab
6x9 inches / Premium Fine Art
