Herbert James Draper Prints – Mythic Figures, Wings & Coastal Stories
Herbert James Draper prints bring mythological subjects into settings of rock, water, flowing cloth and richly coloured architecture. Extended limbs and large wings can establish the main movement within a scene. Explore the collection alongside mythological art, Academic prints and figurative painting.
A group gathered around the wings
The Lament for Icarus places the central reclining body among surrounding figures and large dark feathers. Pale arms and warm fabric interrupt the rocky setting. The wings spread through much of the composition, connecting the small group to a much broader arrangement of curved forms.
An upright figure within the doorway
The Gates of Dawn raises the body beside a tall warm-toned architectural opening, with trailing fabric and blue distance beyond. The long vertical format follows the gesture. The defined threshold gives the figure a different enclosure from the rocky coast.
An extended arm above the shore
Ariadne turns the figure towards open water, with a pale cloth sweeping around the torso and a warm red drapery below. Rocks anchor the lower space. The outward gesture opens the composition towards the sea rather than drawing attention into an enclosed group.
