Painted during a pivotal period in Jawlensky’s artistic development, this vibrant landscape transforms the Bavarian village of Murnau through bold colour, simplified forms and emphatic brushwork.

The Village of Murnau is an excellent choice for admirers of Alexej von Jawlensky prints, German Expressionist art and colourful modernist landscapes. Rather than attempting a purely naturalistic representation, Jawlensky uses heightened colour and strong contrasts to communicate atmosphere and emotion, giving the scene an immediacy that still feels strikingly modern.

A Vibrant Murnau Landscape by Alexej von Jawlensky

Murnau am Staffelsee in Bavaria became an important centre for avant-garde artists in the years immediately before the First World War. Jawlensky spent time in the area alongside fellow artists including Marianne von Werefkin, Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter, and the surrounding landscape provided fertile ground for experimentation with increasingly expressive approaches to colour and form.

Created in 1908, The Village of Murnau captures this moment of artistic transition. Buildings and landscape are simplified into strongly defined shapes while vivid areas of colour establish the composition's rhythm. The result lies between recognisable landscape painting and the increasingly liberated use of colour that would become fundamental to German Expressionism.

As Alexej von Jawlensky wall art, the composition has considerable decorative impact. Its rich palette can introduce colour to a neutral contemporary room or complement interiors featuring other Expressionist, Fauvist and early modernist artworks.

Prints and Canvas Panels for Modern Interiors

Available as both fine art prints and canvas panels, The Village of Murnau offers a distinctive alternative to conventional landscape wall art. Its combination of recognisable architecture, expressive brushwork and saturated colour makes it particularly effective in living rooms, bedrooms, studies, hallways and creative workspaces.

A fine art print emphasises the graphic quality and colour relationships within Jawlensky’s composition, while a canvas panel gives the artwork a substantial, painterly presence. Both formats allow this important example of Alexej von Jawlensky art to become a compelling focal point within traditional, eclectic or contemporary interiors.

About Alexej von Jawlensky

Alexej von Jawlensky (1864–1941) was a Russian-born painter who became one of the most important figures associated with German Expressionism. Born in Torzhok in the Russian Empire, Jawlensky initially pursued a military career before devoting himself increasingly to art. He studied in St Petersburg and later moved to Munich, where he became immersed in the city's progressive artistic circles.

Jawlensky developed close personal and artistic relationships with figures including Marianne von Werefkin, Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter. He was a founding member of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München (New Artists' Association Munich) and was subsequently associated with the artists surrounding Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider).

His work was influenced by artists including Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Henri Matisse, yet Jawlensky developed a highly individual visual language characterised by saturated colour, strong outlines and the simplification of natural forms. His landscapes, portraits and celebrated series of increasingly abstract human faces helped establish his reputation as a major figure in European modernism.

Alexej von Jawlensky’s Painting Style

Colour lies at the heart of Jawlensky’s art. Rather than simply reproducing the colours observed in nature, he increasingly treated colour as an independent expressive force. Reds, blues, greens, yellows and purples could be intensified or juxtaposed to create emotional and visual tension.

His landscapes from the Murnau period are especially important in this development. In works such as The Village of Murnau, conventional perspective becomes less important than the arrangement of coloured shapes across the surface. Buildings, trees and hills remain identifiable, but they are transformed through energetic brushwork and simplified structure.

This distinctive approach makes Alexej von Jawlensky landscape prints particularly appealing to collectors interested in the transition from Post-Impressionism and Fauvism towards Expressionism and abstraction.

Why Choose The Village of Murnau Wall Art?

A Paul— pardon, an Alexej von Jawlensky print of The Village of Murnau offers much more than a conventional picturesque landscape. Its combination of historic importance and powerful colour gives the artwork an unusually contemporary character more than a century after it was painted.

It is particularly suited to collectors searching for German Expressionist prints, Alexej von Jawlensky posters and prints, colourful Expressionist wall art, early modernist landscape prints or distinctive European art for the home. The composition can also work especially well as part of a gallery wall alongside works by Kandinsky, Münter and other pioneers of modern European
