Painted in 1909, this striking portrait captures the dancer Alexander Sakharoff with a direct, commanding gaze, dramatic facial colouring and the saturated red tones that became increasingly important in Jawlensky's work during this formative period.

Available as high-quality art prints and canvas panels, this remarkable portrait makes an arresting focal point for contemporary, eclectic and modernist interiors. Its combination of simplified form, emphatic outlines and intense colour gives the image a remarkably modern presence more than a century after it was painted.

A Striking Expressionist Portrait

Portrait of Alexander Sakharoff is one of Jawlensky's memorable early portraits and demonstrates his movement away from conventional naturalism towards a far more expressive use of colour and form. Sakharoff faces the viewer almost directly, his heavily defined eyes and vivid features creating an extraordinary sense of immediacy.

Rather than attempting to reproduce every detail realistically, Jawlensky uses colour to communicate character and emotion. Rich reds, dark outlines and contrasting areas of colour transform the sitter into a powerful visual presence. For admirers of Expressionist art prints, Fauvist colour and early twentieth-century modernism, this composition provides a particularly compelling example of Jawlensky's developing style.

Alexej von Jawlensky Prints for Modern Interiors

Alexej von Jawlensky prints are especially effective in interiors where strong colour and distinctive figurative art can become the centre of attention. Portrait of Alexander Sakharoff works beautifully as statement wall art in a living room, bedroom, hallway, study or creative workspace.

The intense palette can provide a dramatic contrast against neutral walls, while the portrait's strong graphic qualities complement mid-century, Scandinavian, Bauhaus-inspired and contemporary interiors. Originally destined for a military career, Jawlensky studied art in St Petersburg before moving to Munich in 1896, where he became closely involved with the city's increasingly experimental artistic community.

His encounters with modern French painting encouraged him to move away from academic realism. Influences including Post-Impressionism and Fauvism helped Jawlensky develop a highly personal visual language built around saturated colour, strong contours and simplified forms.

Portraiture became particularly important to his work. Jawlensky increasingly treated the human face not simply as a likeness but as a vehicle for colour, emotion and spiritual expression. Paintings such as Portrait of Alexander Sakharoff reveal this transition particularly clearly, combining recognisable features with increasingly intense and stylised colour.

Jawlensky was closely connected with artists including Wassily Kandinsky, Marianne von Werefkin, Gabriele Münter and other members of Munich's avant-garde. His work is now strongly associated with the development of German Expressionism and the artistic environment surrounding Der Blaue Reiter.

Painting Style

Portrait of Alexander Sakharoff belongs to a crucial period in Jawlensky's artistic development. By 1909, his portraits were becoming increasingly simplified and expressive, with naturalistic colour giving way to vivid reds, blues, greens and dark outlining.

The
